Diversity, Inclusion, Access & Equity...
Surati for Performing Arts (Surati FPA) is a woman of color (WOC) / BIPOC led organization. As an organization Surati FPA is built on a strong foundation of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility. Those are the pillars of the organization’s founding philosophy. Even though our work is rooted in Indian art and culture that tell meaningful stories from India through the universal language of the performing arts, every one of our productions, performances, festivals and events feature acts from world cultures, include a diverse and multicultural team of performers and crew and are fully accessible to differently abled people.
From its inception, Surati has nurtured, celebrated and sustained art that integrates various art forms and disciplines. True to its founder’s vision, Surati creates performances that traverse a wide terrain and weaves in its core, a tapestry of practices and traditions derived from disparate schools of thought.
In its artistic liberties and choices, Surati consciously picks inspiration from literature and topics that provides freedom to variously interpret and include styles and traditions from a range of sources worldwide. In that sense, Surati is one of its kind organization in the world that produces stories of Indian culture viewed from a global lens. Even in places where the audience is of a certain demographic, Surati consciously and deliberately introduces diverse concepts and renders traditional pieces in an innovative way that has direct messages of universal fellowship, peace and equality.
Artists and technicians employed by Surati are carefully chosen to reflect its open, inclusive and egalitarian approach. Even when including classical pieces traditional to a specific culture; arts and artists from different styles are sought and grafted to work seamlessly. This cross- pollination of ideas has led to the creation of many shows that have been appreciated and admired by audiences of all races, religions, and ideological affiliations.
The organization is founded and run by a woman and it counts among its members and employees, multi-lingual persons of various nationalities, religions, ethnic backgrounds, and sexual orientation. It is a clearly established fact that color-blind and gender-neutral casting has always been the norm. Also, compensation to performers is determined by the importance of the role and nothing else. We at Surati view diversity and inclusion as only the beginning.
Acceptance and celebration of our differences is not only our creative and artistic choice, It is also our greatest strength and our natural state of being. We at Surati for Performing Arts are proud to be a part of this exciting community and be recognized as a pioneering organization in Hudson County. We have been engaged in production of multicultural programming for over 2 decades to reflect not only the wide social and artistic oeuvre of the state but also its rich natural diversity and academic institutions. The presence of a multitude of cultures, arts traditions, artists and artisans, we have been provided with the ability and reach to include these diverse schools and traditions in our programs.
We look to maintain the authenticity of the culture and the traditions by producing original scripts, dance choreography, and music based on Indian classical and Indian folk-art forms. Besides depicting Indian culture and its performing arts heritage, the message of unity through diversity, equality for all races, and ethnicity are integrally embedded in our presentations/productions.
